Fall Overseeding in Kansas City and Overland Park

Overseeding is the best way to fix patchy areas of your lawn that need a “touch up” after being beaten down by the heat, foot traffic and drought of the summer. If your lawn is covered with a layer of thatch that hinders water from properly irrigating the grass overseeding is useless, without first verticutting your to break up the layers of thatch and to break up the soil to better suit the new seeds. Watering Instructions for Newly Over-Seeded Lawns

Newly overseeded lawns require special irrigation. Water your newly seeded lawn daily and may need as many as four light waterings in a single day. Keep the seedbed moist, but not saturated, to a depth of 1 to 2 inches until germination occurs (grass seedlings are ¼ to ½ inches tall). Seedlings of a new lawn must not be stressed to the point of wilt. Continue with light applications of water- 1/8 to ¼ inches one to four times per day. Watering with a light mist is best for establishing new lawns. As seedlings reach 2 inches in height, gradually reduce the frequency of watering and water more deeply. After the new lawn has been mowed two or three times, deep, infrequent watering is best. In absence of rain, water established turf between 1 to 1.5 inches per week.
